The plots are only slightly similar, as there is a good guy, a bad guy, and a guy who is somewhere in between, and they're all looking for treasure.
Great action sequences, great cinematography, and a great cast. Plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. The actor who plays the "bad" guy is very recognizable, as he shows up in a lot of American movies these days.
A serious throwback to the Hollywood days of old; there are plenty of cool stunts and very real explosions, instead of it being all CG like most American movies today.
There is limited use of CGI, such as the bird of prey at the beginning of the movie, which is really the only thing that bothered me.
The big chase sequence toward the end of the movie is reminiscent of the final chase in The Road Warrior. Rival gangs, the main characters and the Japanese military all get in the mix.
Overall I enjoyed this movie so much that I have watched it several times. I have seen this movie show up on more than one "Greatest 50 Westerns" lists.
Don't miss this movie if you enjoy Westerns! I'm not sure if there is an English dub; I've only watched with subtitles.
Doesn't hurt that both the Good and the Bad embody two equally pleasing variations on masculine beauty. The Weird is, well, maybe not-so-conventionally attractive, but he has by far the most personality and certainly runs away with every scene he's in - plus he convincingly sells you on every contradiction and plot twist that goes into his character while being super charmingly funny.
I love Lee Byung-hun, but Song Kang-ho is the one who pulls off playing the role upon whom the entire movie plot rests.
GREAT fight scenes and action set pieces. The final chase across the desert, with five? Or even like a motion-sickness-inducing shaky cam Jason Bourne fight, bless his heart.
No, we get decently long takes, plenty of practical stunts, and lots of character work still happening during the scene. It's so satisfying. Awesome, Awesome Not only is the movie incredible but so is all the extras.
They go into great lengths to explain how it is made and extraordinary detail on the costumes, animals, the actors, the behind the scenes people If that isn't enough, then it is worth watching again.
Highly, highly recommended. Lots of action and funny too. They do things in here that Hollywood does not and puts American film making to shame.
We are this pro-Second Amendment country and the South Koreans get it right. They know their firearms, and when they are fired, they don't all sound the same; different calibers and types of firearms go "BOOM" differently and you hear that in this film.
For those of us you have had firearms training, understand the proper ways to handle guns. This film, you see a character holding a gun wrong and paying the consequences, and not only reloading, but also doing so on horseback.
You cannot give this movie enough stars, the authenticity is fantastic. I guess you could consider this an almost shot-for-shot recreation of "The Good, the Bad, and The Ugly", if all characters were Korean.
And the movie were far more action-oriented? This movie is bizarre to a western observer, with Spider-man-esque gunfight scenes, weird villains, and a bad guy who is essentially an inescapable force of nature.
It is entertaining It may be better explained in many circumstances, but Overall, yes, I recommend it for a watch. Madcap enough to be extremely entertaining.
You might not care after the first, which I wouldn't blame you for, but See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. This film is excellent Their choice is crap Park Do-won, The Good Jung Woo-sung —an eagle-eyed bounty hunter—appears on the scene to claim the bounty on Chang-yi.
Meanwhile, Tae-goo escapes, eluding his Good and Bad pursuers. A fourth force—a group of Manchurian bandits—also want the map to sell to the Ghost Market.
Tae-goo hopes to uncover the map's secrets and recover what he believes is gold and riches buried by the Qing Dynasty just before the collapse of their government.
As the story continues, an escalating battle for the map occurs, with bounties placed on heads and the Imperial Japanese Army racing to reclaim its map as it can apparently "save the Japanese Empire".
After a series of graphic shootouts and chases, a final battle erupts in which the Japanese army, Manchurian bandits, Do-won, Chang-yi and his gang are chasing Tae-goo all at once.
The Japanese army kills most of the bandits. Do-won kills many Japanese soldiers and sets off an explosion that drives them away.
Chang-yi's gang is slowly killed off and he kills those that attempt to leave the chase. Only Chang-yi, Tae-goo and Do-won make it to the "treasure".
However, they find that it is nothing more than a boarded-over hole in the desert. Chang-yi recognizes Tae-goo as the "Finger Chopper"—a criminal that cut off his finger in a knife fight five years ago—and the man that Do-won had thought Chang-yi to be.
Turning on each other in a final act of vengeance for the slights they suffered, they finally gun each other down after a prolonged Mexican standoff.
The three lie in the sand, dying and alone, as the "useless hole" that they fought and died for suddenly and belatedly erupts with a geyser of crude oil.
Do-won survives along with Tae-goo. With a newly raised bounty on Tae-goo, a new chase begins as he flees across the Manchurian desert. Two versions of the film were released in cinemas: one being for the native Korean market and the other for international sales.
The Korean theatrical cut is minutes long and the international cut is minutes long. In the alternative ending, The Weird , Tae-goo, gets up.
He reveals the thick metal sheet he hid under his quilted jacket and limps over to demolish the corpse of Chang-yi, The Bad. While doing so, he discovers diamonds in Chang-yi's pocket and giggles with delight before realising he's surrounded by the Japanese army.
Inadvertently lighting a stick of dynamite, Tae-goo scares off the Japanese and dives for cover after realising it was lit.
Over the credits, Tae-goo sets off to continue hunting for the treasure with his bounty multiplied sevenfold, while The Good , Do-won, vindictively pursues him.
The ending of the international version reflects the end that director Kim Jee-woon originally wanted. In the United Kingdom, the British Board of Film Classification ordered five seconds of cuts to the cinema release due to scenes of horse falls judged to be animal cruelty that violated the Cinematograph Films Animals Act The film was screened out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival on May 24, American distribution rights were acquired by IFC Films , who released it in theaters on a limited basis on April 23, The Good, the Bad, the Weird received generally positive reviews.
Everything boils down to the action, and what that action means". On the other hand, there were criticism directed towards the excessive violence and the simplicity of the script.
In particular, the Village Voice ' s Nicolas Rapold mentioned that "Kim's filmmaking is generally cartoonish in a bad sense, as he squanders his set pieces, flashbacks, and other attention-getting with sometimes downright wretched staging" [20] while the Boston Globe wrote that the film "goes for shallow pop instead of narrative depth.
It's a lot of fun before it wears you out, and it wears you out sooner than it should. As vigorously staged as it all is -- sometimes confusingly, occasionally with camera-torqueing flair and impressive stuntwork -- the urge to thrill grows wearisome.
Were audience members to be included as a collective character as well, they'd be 'The Tired'. The film was released on DVD on March 11, The Korean release contains a longer version of the film and the international release has a slightly shorter cut with English subtitles.

One person found this helpful. Thought I'd give this a go after it being recommended.. I used to love Westerns when I was a lot younger, even the 'Spaghetti' Westerns held me enthralled..!
The film is a bit on the long side, but enjoyed it as I'm biased as I enjoy Asian Films and found the ending a little strange as the three of them are at a Mexican Stand Off in the desert, trying to shoot each other.
How they can survive this, is beyond me, but at the end of the film, it looks as if two of them do.. Would recommend if you like silly films..
Really enjoyed this movie. Fantastic direction and photographic technique - checkout the opening credit sequence around the hurtling steam train with transition from external to internal shot.
Loved the all-action nature of the film, and the wryness of the script. The characters are very well portrayed, and the film has a manga-esque quality with its eclectic mix of tech and primitivity, as well as costume design and characerisation.
The soundtrack is tremendous, and of note is the way the film highlights the different sounds of firing guns of which there are plenty from the timpani-esqe field gun of the japanese army to the short whip-crack of hand held pistol and mechanical jangle of automatic weaponry.
The credit sequence closing the movie is the first time for a long time I have sat through an entire closing sequence and this was due to the strength of the music at the end of the film, wondefully jazzy number with hammond organ flourishes.
Finally of note is the desert chase sequence which goes on and on and is all conducted at a high speed over a seeming endless desert plain.
This is the 2 disc set and its worth watching the "making of" featurette to see how difficult the conditions endured by the actors and film crew were during the making of this film.
Absolutely wonderful, a tad violent in a Korean kind of way - would not recommend for under 15s - but otherwise a must-see.
Very highly rated!! Like a lot of other reviewers, I bought this because I used to like "spaghetti" westerns. However, this effort put me under a great deal of strain, from the opening melee on a well mocked up train, to the downright confusing ending s , not to mention the almost non stop slaughter every few minutes.
A big negative for me was the subtitling, which flashed on and off the screen far too quickly for my ageing mincers, whilst I began to have difficulties in trying to sort out who was who.
All in all an impressive effort - especially the incredibly well thought out and executed chase in the second half of the film, but, for me, the ambiguous ending ruined it.
Far too baffling. A well made film, but one that I won't watch again. Read some of the views and decided to take a punt and purchase the item.
This is the two disc vresion with a number of added features. The plot though not necessarrily the strongest does not detract from this excellent Korean film.
However the acting, dialogue, cinematography and qulaity of the film are outstanding. The colours and the time settings are incredible.
This has very funny moments copuled with poignant moving moments. Of course there are some grotesque moments which add to the brilliance of this film.
All world film addicts should watch this with pleasure and really rubber stamps South Korea's mark as a major high quality movie maker.
